Our Story

Open Hands Prayer began with a simple urge on my heart. I'm Sam Quaglio, and one Black Friday, I felt called to go out and pray for strangers. With the desire to reach at least one person that day, I set out for a local Walmart, holding a sign that read, "CAN I PRAY FOR YOU?". When I arrived, I grabbed my sign and started walking toward the entrance. Suddenly, fear struck me as I noticed a "No Soliciting" sign. I immediately turned around and went straight back to my car.

After looking up what the law said about soliciting, I opened my Bible for my daily reading. It happened to be 2 Timothy 1, which speaks on being faithful. One verse stood out to me more than any other, 2 Timothy 1:8: "So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don't be ashamed of me, either, even though I'm in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News."

Reading that, I knew I had to go back out and pray for people, even if it meant facing my fear of the rules. That day, I got to pray for five people! Christ worked through me, and the Holy Spirit was truly on the move.

That experience lit a fire in my soul. Wanting to do it again, I invited my brother in Christ, Stetson, to join me the next time. That day, we were able to pray for four people! It started to feel like a math equation: the next time, we invited another friend and were able to pray for even more people. Soon after, we had nine people out praying for others. The movement has just kept growing, with more and more people stepping out of their comfort zones to boldly pray for strangers.

Around that same time, Stetson had an experience that would shape the direction of Open Hands Prayer in a powerful way. Coming off a spiritual high from one of our public prayer outings, he found himself shopping at Home Depot the following day, still wearing a Christian T-shirt. A stranger struck up a conversation about God, and just like that, another fire was lit.

Stetson had been thinking about a challenge we often faced: prayer signs were not always welcome. We would regularly be asked to leave the fronts of businesses, unable to bring our signs inside. He began praying for a solution, seeking a way to keep praying for people wherever we went, inside and outside, without restriction. Shortly after, the Holy Spirit answered. The idea was simple but bold: create a T-shirt that would open doors to prayer in everyday life.

As Stetson puts it: "I give full credit to the Holy Spirit for giving me this idea. We can have so much more opportunity to pray for others in our everyday activities if we are wearing His heart on our sleeves."

The Holy Spirit put it on his heart to put "Can I Pray for You?" in big letters across the back. Almost immediately, Stetson reached out to me and shared the idea. After about 30 minutes of conversation, we decided to get to work. With no intention to make a profit, we started designing and creating a shirt that puts into action the words of James:

"Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much."
--James 5:16 NASB1995

These shirts have already become incredible conversation starters and have produced amazing God-moments. Everyone wears a shirt, so why not wear one that creates an opportunity to show God's glory?
